ilumi products and their ingredients
Are all ilumi products suitable for people with coeliac disease?
Yes, we've created our entire range to be gluten-free, so all ilumi dishes are suitable for people with coeliac disease.
You say that ilumi products are milk-free. What does that mean?
Milk free means that the products in the ilumi range are free from any ingredients that contain cow’s milk, such as cream, cheese, butter or yoghurt, as well as less obvious hidden or unexpected milk extracts which you can sometimes find in in products like chorizo or pancetta.
Instead of replacing milk with a substitute ingredient, we’ve gone our own way and discovered great recipes that simply don’t need to include dairy, like our Kerala Chicken curry (it uses coconut milk instead).
I can’t have lactose. Are ilumi products suitable for me?
Yes, absolutely. As all of our products are milk-free none of them contain lactose (the sugar found in milk).
I have a specific food allergy. How do I know which ilumi products are suitable for me?
When you enter our ilumi product page, you’ll see our specially-developed search function at the left of the page; this will allow you to easily filter our full range of foods based on exactly what you want to exclude (or include).
A full ingredient list is also displayed on each individual product webpage, so if you’re tempted by one of our ilumi products, simply click on its image to find out more about what it contains.
I bought one of your chicken dishes, but when I came to eat it I noticed that the chicken was pink on the inside. I am worried that the meat is uncooked.
Please don't worry; all the chicken in our pouches and trays is fully cooked and perfectly safe to eat. Sometimes the chicken can appear pink in the centre because of our cooking method, but this should disappear after a few minutes when exposed to the air. Because we seal the food in the pouch and then cook it fully, it's actually safe to eat hot or cold (though we do recommend heating it for the best flavour!)
Do you have ilumi products suitable for vegetarians or vegans?
Yes, we have developed a number of dishes suitable for vegetarians and vegans. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, use the tick box at the left hand side of our shop page to filter the range of products to only show those suitable for you
You say on the packaging that you use 100% natural ingredients, what does that mean?
Our 100% natural claim means that the ingredients used to create our ilumi product range are those that are derived from natural sources. We do not use any MSG or genetically modified ingredients. ilumi does not use any articical colourings or flavourings.
Where does your meat come from?
All of our beef, pork, lamb and chicken is quality British meat sourced from a trusted supplier. Our pancetta is produced in and sourced from Italy for a truly authentic taste.
How do you ensure that ilumi products don’t contain anything that could be harmful to me?
At ilumi, allergen safety starts at the very beginning: we develop our recipes to be naturally free of allergens whenever possible. We select our suppliers with great care, and only use ingredients that have been processed on nut-, dairy- and gluten-free production lines. We handle all our ingredients according to strict rules to prevent cross-contamination, and we use controlled manufacturing processes and cleaning validation systems to ensure our recipes only contain exactly what we declare on the pack.
We're very confident in our allergen-control processes, and the British Retail Consortium agrees with us; we proudly hold one of their highest levels of accreditation.
Each of our products has its own webpage in the ilumi with a full list of ingredients, so you can check to see exactly what it contains. If it's not on the list, it's not in the package!
To find out more about the specific controls we have in place to enable us to make our allergen promise to you, then read more here.
I can’t have yeast. Are ilumi products suitable for me?
We don’t add yeast as an ingredient to any of our ilumi recipes. Our fermented ingredients (alcohol, vinegars and soya sauce) are fermented using yeast; the distilling and fining process removes the yeast from the finished ingredient.
If you are sensitive to yeast and you have chosen to avoid fermented ingredients, use the search function to exclude alcohol, vinegar and soya sauce when choosing recipes.
Are ilumi products suitable on a weight controlled diet?
ilumi meals are all portion controlled for one person with the full nutritional information shown on our website and on pack; as such they can be included as part of any healthy, balanced diet and are ideal for people who are keeping a record of their calorie intake whilst looking for nutritious, but above all, delicious meals
The packaging and storage of ilumi products
Should I freeze or refrigerate ilumi products?
All of our products have been designed to be stored at room temperature, so they can be safely kept in your cupboard. Once the pouch or tray has been opened, the food is best heated and eaten straight away.
You can keep the pouches and trays in the fridge if you wish, but we don’t recommend freezing them.
How can ilumi meals stay fresh without refrigeration or freezing?
It’s all down to the special cooking process we use. We combine the recipe ingredients in individual pouches or trays, seal them and then gently heat them using high pressure and steam until they are cooked. This keeps all of the flavours, aromas and goodness inside and protects them from any contamination by spoilage bacteria.
What is the shelf life for ilumi products?
All of our ilumi products have a 12-month shelf life from the day of their production. We will always endeavour to make sure that you get at least 3 months remaining shelf life when you buy from us. Any short dated (i.e. those with very short shelf life left) will be advertised in order for you to make an informed decision.
Can I recycle the packaging?
Our pouches are not currently recyclable, as they have to be made from 4 different composite plastic layers to provide protective packaging for our products. Some companies, like Terracycle, have begun re-using multilayer pouches like ours to create new products; if you are interested in getting involved with their effort, you may wish to contact them.
Our tray sleeves are made of cardboard and are recyclable, as are our plastic trays.
Preparing ilumi meals to eat
Can I eat ilumi meals cold?
The way we prepare our dishes means that they don't necessarily require heating before eating and can be safely eaten cold. However, for maximum taste we do recommend that you heat the meal before eating it.
How should I heat my ilumi meals?
All of our pouches and trays can be quickly heated in the microwave, and can also be heated on a hob if the contents are transferred to a saucepan first.
Alternatively, you can heat our pouches by immersing them in boiling water.
For best results, always check the heating instructions on the packaging or on the individual product’s web page.
Snack Pots - the seasoning sachet should be emptied into the noodle block. Boiling water to be added to the fill line (approx 300ml) and stirred. Left to stand for 4 minutes, stir well and then separate the noodles and enjoy!
Can I put the trays in the oven if I don’t have a microwave?
No, unfortunately our trays are not suitable for oven use.
