It’s Shrove Tuesday, the day where hapless cooks will be scraping a combination of egg and flour off their ceilings.
The day where it’s acceptable to eat cakes laden with, sugar, syrup, chocolate and jam for tea!
Back when the day was a Pagan festival, people would eat pancakes for a whole week. This is because the hot, round pancakes symbolised the sun and the arrival of Spring. The first pancake made was put on a window for the spirits of their ancestors.
**Fact:** Did you know shrove comes from the word shrive meaning confess.
Nowadays, the last day before lent is where Pancake Day takes place, as it is a chance to use up all your eggs, flour and milk before fasting for the Lenten season.
So if you’re planning on giving up gluten for lent, or are wanting a healthier alternative to your usual stodgy pancake, why not try these gluten free pancake recipes.
